What a Canadian invoice needs
If you are registered for GST/HST, your client needs specific details to claim their input tax credit. A registered invoice should show your business name, your GST/HST number, the invoice date, a description of the work, the amount, and the GST/HST you charged. The missing piece is almost always the GST/HST number, without it your business clients cannot recover the tax.
The rate is based on where your client is, not where you are. A freelancer in Alberta billing an Ontario client charges 13% HST, because the place-of-supply rule for most services follows the client's province. Services to clients outside Canada are zero-rated at 0%.
Not registered yet?
You only have to charge GST/HST once you pass the $30,000 registration threshold. Below it, switch the tax option off and invoice without GST/HST. If you are just setting up, the sole proprietorship registration guide walks through what you actually need.
Tired of rebuilding invoices by hand?
NorthOS sends invoices, tracks who has paid, and files the GST/HST you collect onto the right lines. The invoice you send and the tax you owe stay in one place.

Is this invoice generator free?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, no account is required, and you can print or save the invoice as a PDF for free.
What GST/HST rate does it use?
The rate is set by your client's province (the place-of-supply rule for most services), using current Canadian GST/HST rates. Ontario is 13% HST, the Atlantic provinces are 15%, Nova Scotia is 14%, and provinces with a separate PST/QST/RST show the 5% GST plus the provincial portion. You choose whether to charge tax at all.
Do I have to charge GST/HST on my invoices?
Only if you are registered for GST/HST, which becomes mandatory once your revenue passes $30,000 over four rolling quarters. If you are a small supplier under that threshold and not registered, switch the tax option off and do not add GST/HST to your invoice.
What does a compliant Canadian invoice need to include?
If you are registered, your invoice should show your business name, your GST/HST number, the invoice date, a description of what was supplied, the amount, and the GST/HST charged. Your client needs those details to claim an input tax credit, so a missing GST/HST number is a common and costly omission.
