What’s new in NorthOS

What changed in NorthOS, newest first, and why it matters if you are self-employed in Canada. Dates are Eastern time and mark the day a change was live for everyone. Only released changes are listed.

  1. NorthOS leaves beta: new prices for new accounts

New accounts pay $19 CAD a month or $189 CAD a year. Accounts created before November 1, 2026 keep their founding price of $12 CAD a month or $119 CAD a year for as long as the subscription stays active, when they subscribe at app.northos.ca.

    • Each extra business is $10 CAD a month on top of your plan.
    • A subscription started inside the phone app pays the store price.
  2. Invoice PDFs carry your logo and a payment link

Add your own logo and an optional payment link in Settings, under Business, and they print on your invoice PDFs. Every invoice PDF you issue also gets a small "Invoice created with NorthOS" line in its footer.

    • The logo is a PNG or JPEG up to 1 MB. You can preview it, replace it or remove it.
    • The payment link prints under the total as "Pay online", and it is clickable.

Fixes. On a job site's card, the invoice buttons (Download PDF, Email PDF, Mark as Paid) are no longer hidden below a small scrolling box. A trial account that tries to add another business now sees a Choose a plan link instead of a dead end. The Show me button on the first-run checklist now opens the Settings tab that holds the control. Approving a scanned receipt while its Google Drive copy is still uploading no longer leaves the ledger row stuck at pending. For Québec businesses, the QST Collected card now says Filed with Revenu Québec.

  3. Mobile app 1.0.10 is out on the App Store and Google Play

The new version of the NorthOS app is available on both stores.

    • Invoices: start an invoice right from a client, see when and how each invoice was sent, and invoice clients in the United States or outside Canada.
    • Receipts: clearer questions when a receipt's tax doesn't match your province, with the right province offered first.
    • Québec: GST and QST are shown separately.

Fixes. Many smaller fixes and improvements throughout the app.

  4. Clients show up where you expect them

A client you add on the Clients screen now shows on your dashboard, and you can start an invoice for a client straight from the Clients screen. Invoice rows also say when and how each invoice was sent, and a client can be in the United States or outside Canada.

Fixes. The Clients button on the dashboard now opens the Clients screen in one click. Physical-service businesses now see clients that have no project yet on the dashboard card. A row waiting in Review that came from a document can be switched between money you spent and money you earned before you approve it. The "No sales are booked" note on the dashboard disappears once you save your first sale. An invoice with no line items prints the description you wrote. Deleting a recipe removes its finished-goods row when it is empty, and keeps the row with a warning when it still holds units.

  5. Sales of your products keep your shelf count honest

If you make and sell products and have stock on your shelf, a sale that reaches your books through an import, North chat, bank reconciliation, a paid invoice or the review queue now asks which product was sold. Pick the product and the count on the sale, and the units come off your shelf.

    • Editing or deleting a product sale gives back exactly the stock that sale took.

Fixes. Makers can now reach invoices from the web dashboard. An invoice on a project prints the project's client name under Bill to when no Clients record matches. For GST/HST and QST registrants, Safe to Spend now counts the sales tax collected on a sale entered in the web ledger as cash received. A semicolon-separated CSV, as saved by a French-language Excel, now imports instead of being refused. Re-uploading a file after you deleted its ledger entry now scans it again instead of saying it is already in your books. A receipt imported from Google Drive now points to the copy of the original file that NorthOS keeps. An invoice you issued and then forwarded to your receipts address now waits as income for review instead of as an expense.

  6. Download the original of a saved receipt

Receipts whose original NorthOS has kept now have a Download original button, so you can get back the image or PDF. Downloading changes nothing in your ledger.

Fixes. A CSV that writes amounts with a decimal comma (57,49 or 1 234,56) is now read as the amount it means. The same purchase in two currencies now counts as one purchase when NorthOS checks for duplicates. An import that would silently drop rows because withdrawals and deposits sit in separate columns is now refused with an explanation.

  7. Bank statement imports check themselves

When you import a PDF bank or card statement, NorthOS now compares what it read with the totals printed on the statement and tells you if a line looks missing or invented. A statement line that matches a receipt already in your books is flagged while you review.

    • A statement line keeps the foreign amount and exchange rate that the statement prints.

Fixes. A balance you type on the statement upload card is no longer overwritten.

  8. Download or email an invoice as a PDF

Every invoice row now has Download PDF and Email to client buttons, whether or not the invoice went through Stripe. The PDF carries your business details and registration numbers, your client, the tax lines and the totals.

    • The first time, a preview shows the client, the tax lines and the totals, and warns you if a GST/HST registration number is missing.
    • Emailing has a daily limit, and NorthOS shows how many sends you have left today.

Fixes. A web edit of a product sale keeps its product and count, so its stock stays where the sale put it. An invoice for goods suggests the tax for where the goods are delivered, for example one HST line when a registered Québec seller delivers to Ontario. A PDF statement's printed opening and closing balances are filled in for you on the Reconcile page, and you can edit them. A bank or card statement forwarded to your receipts address is imported line by line instead of saved as one receipt.

  9. A day job counts in your tax set-aside

If you also earn a salary, Settings, under Tax, now has a place for your T4 income. Your income tax and CPP or QPP set-aside then counts that income too, instead of treating your business as your only income.

  10. Québec: your return goes to Revenu Québec, and NorthOS says so

If you are a Québec GST/HST registrant, NorthOS now names Revenu Québec, not the CRA, as where your GST/HST and QST return goes, across the web app and your exports. North, the in-app assistant, now answers Québec questions from facts taken from Revenu Québec's own guides.

Fixes. Québec Quick Method filers see both remittance rates, the GST's and the QST's, in Settings and on the dashboard banner. A Québec registrant's setup preview sets aside the QST as well as the GST. With several businesses, the combined Québec return takes the Quick Method 1% reduction on the QST once for the registrant, not once per business. A server error or a dropped connection when a page loads no longer signs you out of the web app.

  11. North answers can be rated, and the Beta badge explains itself

Each North answer on the web now shows Helpful? with a thumbs up and a thumbs down. A thumbs down opens an optional "What was wrong?" box, and you can change your rating. Tap the Beta badge to read what it means, including on a touch screen.

Fixes. Editing an invoice on the phone now saves, and deleting an invoice you sent through Stripe cancels the client's payment link.

  12. Duplicate checks reach imported payments

When the payment for a bill arrives through an import, NorthOS now asks "same bill?" during review instead of booking it twice.

Fixes. Each browser tab now saves to the business it shows, so switching business in another tab cannot move your settings. Every input tax credit warning on the web app can be dismissed, and stays dismissed until it changes. Choosing Import from Google Drive on an account that never connected Drive now starts the connection. A mileage trip's category can be edited on the web. Receipts that arrive by email or the Drive inbox now appear in the Receipts list after approval.

  13. NorthOS asks when a bill and its payment look like the same purchase

When a supplier invoice and the bank payment that settles it weeks later both reach your books, NorthOS now asks "same bill?" before it books the second one. It asks the same question when an invoice with the same vendor invoice number arrives twice.

Fixes. A scanned Interac e-Transfer confirmation is asked "only the fee is an expense?", whatever words the scan comes back with. A photo attached to a row that already holds a receipt is uploaded and shown on the row instead of staying at pending. A logged trip is no longer offered as a $0.00 entry in the web attach-photo picker. A receipt whose printed date can be read two ways now books on the recent reading, not an old year, when that is the reading your history supports.
