Quick Method for Nunavut sole proprietors
Nunavut has no territorial sales tax — sole proprietors collect and remit 5% federal GST only. A large share of Nunavut's sole-proprietor economy involves contracting to federal or territorial government departments, where invoices can be substantial but business expenses are often concentrated in non-ITC-eligible categories like remote travel, housing, and subsistence. The Quick Method's flat 3.6% rate on tax-included service revenue frequently outperforms the Regular Method in this environment. For a government contractor in Iqaluit billing $80,000 per year, the Quick Method can save over $1,000 annually compared to filing with minimal ITCs.
To elect the Quick Method: file Form GST74 with CRA before the first day of the reporting period you want it to apply to. Once elected, you must stay on Quick Method for at least one full fiscal year before switching back.
Who can't use Quick Method: accountants, bookkeepers, lawyers, notaries, financial advisors, and actuaries are ineligible in all provinces. Most other sole proprietors with annual taxable revenue under $400,000 qualify.
