The Death of the Flat Rate: Home Office Deductions in 2026
For three years, the CRA made home office claims easy with a $2 per day flat rate. Those days are over. For the 2025 and 2026 tax years, you must use the Detailed Method to claim your workspace expenses.
Quick Rule
To qualify, your home office must be your **principal place of business** (more than 50% of the time) OR used **exclusively** for work and for meeting clients regularly.
The Calculation (Area x Time)
Under the detailed method, you cannot just pick a number. You must calculate the business-use percentage of your home based on size and usage.
The Formula:
(Workspace Area / Total Finished Area) x (Hours worked / 24 hours)Note: If your office is a dedicated room used ONLY for work, you do not need the time-of-use adjustment.
